National Cultural Work Symposium Held in Nanjing

A national symposium on cultural work was held Thursday in Nanjing, capital city of east China's Jiangsu Province, on the eve of the Sixth China Art Festival which opened in the evening.

Vice Premier Li Lanqing, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, addressed the symposium.

Participants at the symposium discussed ways to develop the socialist culture with Chinese characteristics in the coming century.

Meanwhile, the organizing committee of the Sixth China Art Festival held its second session, which was presided over by Culture Minister Sun Jiazheng.

Speaking at the meeting, Li Lanqing, who is also chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Sixth China Art Festival, stressed the importance of availing all Chinese people of the art festival.

He also urged Chinese artists, like singers and dancers, to make contributions to the prosperity of the nation's culture, and use the art festival, held every three years, as a platform to demonstrate the cultural achievements.
