Postal Deposit Business Grows

China's postal deposit business has been growing rapidly since the "Green Card" project was kicked off nationwide in 1993, according to a press release by the State Postal Service Bureau (SPSB) Thursday.

The "Green Card" project aimed to upgrade computer systems technology in China's postal offices. So far, "Green Card" centershave been set up in 49 cities, linking 8,228 postal offices in 1,189 counties and cities. Average daily deposit turnover reached 176 million yuan (21.2 million U.S. dollars) in these offices.

The SPSB authorities noted that the postal deposit business will help collect idle funds, stabilize the financial market and serve the expansion of the national economy.

Latest statistics show that China's postal deposits reached 426.6 billion yuan (about 51.4 billion U.S. dollars) at the end of June.

The SPSB plans to upgrade computer networks to push forward electronic business, sources said.
