National Day Reception for HK, Macao, Taiwan Compatriots

National Day Reception for HK, Macao, Taiwan Compatriots
A National Day reception was held Thursday for compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and representatives of overseas Chinese and various ethnic groups in China.

Over 900 guests, including Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), attended the reception marking the 51st anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, which falls on October 1.

Wang Zhaoguo, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, briefed those present on the situation in China, including the successful implementation of the "One Country, Two Systems" in Hong Kong and Macao.

Wang, also head of the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, said it is the lofty aspiration and historical responsibility of all the Chinese people, including the Taiwan compatriots, to resolve the Taiwan issue and realize the complete reunification of the motherland.

He said that recognition of the One China principle is the precondition for solving the issue of Taiwan, adding any attempts to engage in "Taiwan Independence" are doomed to failure.

"We will continue to carry out the policy of 'peaceful reunification and one country, two systems'... and strive unremittingly for an early realization of peaceful reunification of the motherland," he said.

Present at the reception were Qian Qichen, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice-premier, several vice-chairmen of the National People's Congress Standing Committee and vice-chairmen of the CPPCC National Committee.

The reception was held by the General Office of the CPPCC National Committee and the United Front Work Department.
