Top Power Provider Sees Business RoarThe State Power Corporation of China, the country's largest provider of electricity, generated 466.3 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in the January-August period, a growth of 9.7 per cent over last year's production levels at this time, said Lu Yanchang, deputy general manager of the company.Lu revealed these figures at a meeting of the company' leaders in Beijing Wednesday. The meeting had been convened to discuss the launching of a new service improvement programme. Lu attributed the increase in electricity consumption to the hefty growth of the national economy. The ongoing upgrading of urban and rural grids also played an important role in the increase of electricity consumption, as did the country-wide high temperatures during the summer, he said. The improved grids enhanced power supply capacity and lowered electricity prices which in turn stimulated the daily consumption of electricity. And the generally high temperatures around the country in June and July forced people to turn on their air conditioners more often. To satisfy the market demands, the State Power Corp has been sparing no efforts in adjusting operations and overhauling schedules to maximize its production potentials, Lu noted. The company will also speed up the west-east electricity transmission programme in a bid to ease the tension of power supply in the east regions. The programme includes the construction of three major transmission lines, from Shanxi and Inner Mongolia to Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei; from Guizhou and Yunnan to Guangdong; and from the Gezhouba Power Station in Hubei Province to Shanghai, Liu said.
