Major Industrial Firms in Shanghai Meet Discharge StandardsShanghai announced Wednesday that all of its 3,702 major polluting industrial firms in operation have met official pollutant discharge standards after four years' efforts to curb pollution.Officials from local industrial and environmental departments said the municipal government has invested 10.83 billion yuan in pollution control projects during the past four years. Of the firms, 170 were closed for failing to meet the standards. The air in urban Shanghai has improved considerably thanks to the efforts as major air pollutants have been down by 27 percent. Under a decision made by the Chinese government in 1996, all the major polluting industrial firms across the country should cut their pollution by the end of the year or face closure. |
