32 Killed in SW China Coalmine Explosion

A gas explosion killed at least 32 miners at a local coalmine in southwestern Guizhou Province Wednesday, Xinhua discovered from the Safe Production Bureau of the State Economic and Trade Commission.

The explosion took place at 8:38 pm at the Muchonggou Mine of the Shuicheng Coalmines, with 241 people still working underground.

Of the stranded miners, 84 have been lifted above ground, three of whom did not survive, while a further 29 were found dead underground, and the rest are yet to be rescued.

The state commission has sent a work team, headed by Minister Cheng Huaren, to organize the rescue at the site.
