China to Foster World-Class Cities in Next 20 YearsChina will spend 20 years upgrading one to three selected Chinese cities into world-class metropolises.A report released by the relevant Chinese government department during the ongoing Sixth Major Cities Summit Beijing 2000 said that China lacks international cities that are strong competitors in both Asian and the global economy, so it is imperative to make greater efforts in this regard to foster more. Experts believe that a lack of international metropolises will not be conducive to China's economy in global competitions and is also not proportionate with China's international status. Historically, China used to have world-class cities such as Kaifeng, Chang'an and Hangzhou. Judging from factors such as economic strength, infrastructure, and the degree of internationalization, Shanghai and Beijing have more potential than other cities to become the future world-class cities. According to the report, China is determined to use about 20 years to build Shanghai and Beijing into international metropolises. However, before 2010, the country will concentrate efforts on fostering and developing Shanghai, turning it into one of the major international centers of economy, finance, trade and shipping.
