Death Toll in Greek Ferry Tragedy Rises
The death toll following the sinking of a ferry in the Aegean Sea has risen to 63 -- with the country's top prosecutor warning that he will press for those responsible to be charged with murder.
As rescue and recovery efforts continue despite gale-force winds, Greek Merchant Marine Ministry officials told CNN on Wednesday that at least 63 people had died and nine others remained missing. The coast guard has rescued 452 passengers.
The captain and four senior crew members are being held by authorities pending a criminal investigation after the ferry sank late on Tuesday when it hit a well-marked reef near the holiday island of Paros.
Justice Minister Michalis Stathopoulos has already said the accident was caused by "criminal negligence."
Following the decision by Supreme Court prosecutor Panagiotis Dimopoulos to seek indictments for murder, it is nearly certain at least some of the detained crew will be prosecuted on those charges following the investigation.
