Science to Better Serve Economy: Minister

The Ministry of Science and Technology has vowed to further increase the contribution of science and technology to the national economy, Thursday's Chinadaily reported.

The ministry intends to help enterprises commercialize new technological findings and upgrade traditional industries with advanced techniques, said Minister Zhu Lilan in an interview with Chinadaily yesterday.

The manufacturing sector will be optimized to facilitate China's economic growth, said Zhu.

With regard to agriculture, more efforts will be made to improve the processing of farm produce and to help farmers make high-value-added products and thus earn more money.

"Farmers' incomes are relatively low. A major factor is the difficulty of selling produce due to its poor quality," Zhu said.

She said that her ministry has launched dozens of scientific programs, such as anti-desertification, to help west China march towards prosperity.

Looking forward to further international co-operation, Zhu said in-depth collaboration with foreign countries is essential, especially in the high-tech field.
