Russia Warns Against Destabilizing Yugoslavia
Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said Wednesday that the situation in Yugoslavia should not be allowed to destabilize and people in that Balkan country should decide on their affairs without any internal or external pressure.
Moscow is closely observing the developments in Yugoslavia, where presidential, parliamentary and local elections took place on September 24, the Interfax news agency quoted Ivanov as saying.
"Russia's position is that the people of Yugoslavia should have full freedom of expression of their will without any internal or external pressure," Ivanov said.
"It is important not to allow the situation to destabilize, which would be to the advantage of only those forces who are not interested in preserving a united Yugoslavia, in the restoration of its positions on the international arena," the minister said.
"We are confident that, acting strictly within the framework of law and being guided by higher national interests, all political forces of Yugoslavia will be able to properly get through this difficult stage in the country's history," he said.
