Poor College Students Receive Donations in Guangdong

Three hundred poor college students in Guangdong Province became the first group of beneficiaries of the Aiding Poor College Students Project Wednesday.

The Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Youth League, the Provincial Education Department and the Guangdong Branch of the Commercial Bank of China, jointly launched the project.

The sponsor of the project will set up a special fund to help college students from poor families to accomplish their education with donations from society.

Donators who contribute 8,000 yuan (US$963.8) can select a beneficiary and provide him with 1,000 (US$121) yuan stipend every term until he or she graduates. A donation below 2,000 yuan (US$241) will be allocated to beneficiaries through the foundation, a local official source said.

The project will cover poor students in junior colleges, universities and graduate schools in Guangdong.

The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China has also launched a special service to accept donations from the society for the project, and initiated an activity appealing to its clients to support the project.
