China's First High-speed IP Network Put into Operation in Guangdong

China's first high-speed IP network was put into operation in Guangdong Wednesday.

China has for the first time linked up the DWDM fiber-optic network with high-capacity IP, this shows that Guangdong Telecom has heralded the building of a backbone network in China, thereby making the "construction of information highway" up onto a new phase.

The province has witnessed a fast development of the 163 data network with its users increasing to 800,000 from January to August, a rise of one fold. To meet the increasing demands, Guangdong Telecom has enlarged 163 capacitance with an investment of 50 million yuan. By adopting the advanced optic network technology, the Telecom has set up an optic network of large capacity in all cities of the province.

The backbone IP network has laid a good foundation for the further development of remote education, long distance medical treatment, and audio and visual broadcasting as well as other broadband services in the province.
