Sino-ROK Seminar on Investment in Western China

About 60 South Korean officials and businessmen from the Republic of Korea discussed with representatives of 130 Chinese enterprises Tuesday in Chengdu for cooperation in western China.

The seminar was sponsored by the State Economic and Trade Commission of China in cooperation with the ROK government department.

Representatives of about 40 large ROK business and industrial companies, including Daewoo and LG, are attending the four-day seminar, which began today.

Industrial cooperation between the two countries began in 1994 when the heads of the two countries reached a bilateral agreement in the industrial sector.

Zhang Zhiguang, vice-minister of the State Economic and Trade Commission, told the seminar that by the end of 1999, China had approved 12,825 ROK-funded projects in China with contracted investment totaling 16.38 billion U.S. dollars and actual sum of investment totaling 8.7 billion U.S. dollars.

ROK has become China's fourth foreign trade partner. China has become ROK's third trade partner, said the vice-minister.
