HK People More Confident in Future: Poll

An increase in public confidence in Hong Kong's future prosperity and stability was detected in a public opinion poll released by the Home Affairs Bureau (HAB) of Hong Kong Wednesday.

In HAB's bi-monthly telephone opinion poll conducted on September 4 to 8, 60 percent of the 1,537 respondents expected Hong Kong would continue to be prosperous and stable, up from 52 percent in the survey conducted in July.

In parallel was 42 percent of respondents expressing satisfaction with the present situation, up from 38 percent in the July survey.

The three most often mentioned problems continued to be those related to labor, economy and housing.

The percentage of respondents who were satisfied with the government's overall performance went up from 20 percent in the July survey to 25 percent.

On the other hand, the percentage of respondents who were dissatisfied with the government's performance dropped from 60 percent to 54 percent.

The survey is the 90th in a series since it was first conducted in 1983. The 1,537 respondents, aged 15 to 64, were randomly chosen through the residential telephone directories and interviewed over the phone in the evenings.
