China Launches First On-line Medicare System

China's first on-line medicare system was launched earlier this month in China's first special economic zone of Shenzhen in Guangdong Province.

This system enables people in Shenzhen to get services in some hospitals and drugstores across the country, said Xue Deheng, an official with local Social Insurance Bureau.

"Compared with the traditional medicare system in which people can only reach medical institutions indirectly through some social insurance companies, the on-line medicare system is more convenient and can provides more choices for the people," said Xue.

As the system develops, he added, about 350 community clinics, over 200 hospitals, and hundreds of drugstores in Shenzhen will be available. Seriously sick patients can also transfer to some better hospitals in Beijing or Guangzhou.

The relevant insurance companies pay the medical institutes regularly, charged to medicare accounts through the Internet.
