Kenya Upholds "One China" Policy: Minister
Kenyan Minister for Information, Transport and Communications Msaalia Mudavadi said Tuesday in Nairobi that Kenya upholds the "One China" policy.
Mudavadi made the remarks at a reception marking the 51st anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China hosted by Chinese ambassador to Kenya An Yongyu.
Addressing the reception, Mudavadi said Kenya, like China, adheres to the principle of national sovereignty, peaceful settlement of international disputes and the Charter of the United Nations, and on the basis of these principles, Kenya upholds the "One China" policy.
On behalf of the government and people of Kenya, he conveyed to the Chinese government and people warm congratulations and best wishes on the occasion of China's national day.
He noted that China and Kenya enjoy cordial and warm relations dating back to Kenya's independence in 1963, saying the recent exchanges of visits by leaders and senior government officials of the two countries have served to enhance political, cultural and economic cooperation between the two countries.
"Financial and technical assistance from China has played a crucial role in the development of our infrastructure, particularly in the areas of road construction and sports facilities. China has certainly become one of the leading partners for our development, " he added.
At the reception, ambassador An briefed the guests on China's economic development since 1978 and China's consistent policy on the Taiwan issue.
He said the Sino-Kenyan relations have been developing steadily with the expansion of bilateral cooperation and continuous exchanges of high-level visits.
The ambassador emphasized, "China always treasures Sino-Kenyan friendship and is ready to make great efforts, together with Kenya, to bring our long-term, stable and mutual beneficial friendly relations and comprehensive cooperation into the 21st century."
Attending the reception were some 500 people including Kenyan Minister for Tourism, Trade and Industry Nicholas Biwott, Minister for Education Stephen Musyoka, Minister for Energy Francis Masakhalia and other senior government officials as well as diplomats from various countries to Kenya.
