Abu Sayyaf Casualties Reach 107

Philippine government troops killed two more Abu Sayyaf members on Monday, bringing to 107 the number of the Muslim terrorists killed in the 11-day military attack, the official Philippines News Agency (PNA) said Tuesday.

The PNA quoted military reports as saying that the two Abu Sayyaf members were killed in a gunbattle between government troops and about 100 Abu Sayyaf members near Mount Tayungan, Sulu province early Monday. Several Abu Sayyaf members were wounded in the battle.

In another gunbattle in late Monday afternoon, one soldier was killed and four other soldiers were wounded when an Army patrol clashed with some 30 Abu Sayyaf members in Talipao, also in the southern Sulu province.

The military said at least 50 Abu Sayyaf members were wounded in the operation while 35 rebels have been arrested. Soldiers have also recovered 210 firearms, one speed boat and some other equipment since the military operation was launched.

Meanwhile, two government soldiers were killed and 10 were wounded since the offensive started on September 16 and participated by about 4,000 soldiers.

Government forces have stepped up their attacks on the fleeing Abu Sayyaf group who is still holding 17 hostages, including an American, three Malaysians and 13 Filipinos.

The Armed Forces have initiated 26 attacks so far while the Abu Sayyaf has mounted one harassment, said the PNA.
