China's Exports of Electromechanical Products to Top US$100 Billion

China is expected to export US$100 billion of electromechanical products this year, beating the set target, officials with Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation said.

Imports and exports of electromechanical products from January to August amounted to US$130 billion, accounting for 43 percent of the country's total foreign trade volume, according to the ministry at an ongoing meeting being held here.

Of the total, exports were US$66 billion and imports were US$64 billion, up 40 percent and 34 percent respectively over the corresponding period last year.

During the Ninth Planning Period (1996-2000), exports of electromechanical products kept growing with a strong momentum, with an annual increase rate of 18 percent, due to technological innovations.

In the past five years, exports of the products accounted for 40 percent over the country's total foreign trade volume, said Fan Shande, deputy director general of the Electromechanical Products Imports and Exports Department of the ministry.

Fan said manufacturers have paid attention to technological innovations. As a result, the varieties and functions of electromechanical products have improved remarkably, which gave a strong boost to exports.

Meanwhile, the products are exported to more countries and regions, he said.
