Indonesian Military Officers Arrested over Bombings

Indonesian Defense Force (TNI) chief Adm Widodo A.S. Tuesday said he will investigate two military officers suspected of having launched bomb attacks in Jakarta.

"I have instructed Kostrad (the Army's Strategic Reserve Command) chief (Lt. Gen. Ryamizard Ryacudu) and Kopassus (the Army's Special Troops) chief (Maj. Gen. Amirul Isnaeni) to investigate the two military officials allegedly involved in the series of bombings in Jakarta," Widodo told reporters before attending a coordinating meeting on political and security affairs here.

He said the TNI has tried hard to disclose the alleged involvement of the two military officers in the bomb attacks and that it trusts the police in investigating the incidents.

Kostrad member Sergeant Ibrahim and Kopassus member Sergeant Irwan were arrested in Bandung, about 180 kilometers southeast of Jakarta, on Sunday. The two added to the 25 earlier arrested in connection with the September 13 bombing of the Jakarta Stock Exchange building and in the grenade attack at the Malaysian Embassy last month.

Indonesian Police chief Gen. Bimantoro said here Monday that the two military officers were from conflict-torn Aceh province.
