Chinese Diving: Failed in Game Rules

Xu Yiming, former head coach of Chinese diving team, said the reason why Li Na and Sang Xue lost on top to Laura Wilkinson, an American diver who took women's 10m platform diving title, was because the Chinese team didn't understand the game rules fully.

Xu said Chinese diving team's failure rests not with its actual performance or high morale but its understanding of rules on movements. The key why Chinese divers had over 20 points on top failed to win their American counterpart was that they paid too much attention to difficult movements and perfect poses instead of having a complete understanding of rules.

Xu said that in this Olympics' diving event the judges had paid more attention to spray pressing than difficulty coefficients and poses.

Laura Wilkinson's whole difficulty coefficients added up to only 14.5, while Li Na's were 14.6 and Sang Xue's 15.6. But her skill of spray pressing is better than her Chinese counterparts. Li Yihua, former world champion, also thought that spray pressing is Laura Wilkinson's only trump.

Li Na is obviously better than Laura Wilkinson in movements except spray pressing. Zhang Ting, coach of the Chinese team complained that the judges had given low scores to Li Na.

Xu said we have the strength to win the remaining five golds. But we must know the opponents' actual force and should not take on them in the way like before.
