HK Light Industry Backed by Strong Export Growth: Report

The strong growth in lighting export has strengthened Hong Kong's status as the souring center of lighting products in Asia, according to a recent report released Tuesday by the Trade Development Council.

Hong Kong has enjoyed double-digit increases in total exports of lighting products since last year, and the export figure registered another 21 percent rise in the first seven months this year, the report said.

And Exports to major markets such as the United States, the EU and Japan grew by 25 percent, 22 percent and 20 percent respectively, it said.

Such strong growth was mainly spurred by increases in construction activities and home purchases in the United States, which stimulated the demand for indoor electric lighting items, and back up by improved consumer confidence in the EU and Japan.

Hong Kong's total exports of lighting products in 1999 reached 10,628 million Hong Kong dollars (1,362 million U.S. dollars).
