China Strongly Demands US to Repatriate Criminal Suspect

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi said China strongly demands the repatriation of a Chinese criminal suspect from the United States as soon as possible.

He made the remarks Tuesday at a regular press conference.

Sun said Zhang Hongbao, a Chinese national who has been involved in crimes of rape, counterfeiting certificates and illegal emigration, entered the United States in February illegally.

China has made several solemn and just representations to the US and provided evidence concerning Zhang's involvement in the crimes, demanding that the United States repatriate Zhang to China for the benefit of law enforcement and bilateral relations cooperation between the two countries.

However, Sun said, a US immigration court has granted Zhang "protection status from cruel penalty" on September 20. This action by the US may aid the criminal suspect in escaping necessary punishment, and as a result, the legitimate rights of the victims are not protected.

This is also a wanton distortion and an attack against China's legal system, Sun stressed.

He pointed out that the actions of the US also reveals its hypocrisy in respecting the rule of law.

China has expressed strong resentment and firm opposition to the actions made by the US, and strongly demands that the US correct its decision and repatriate Zhang as soon as possible, the spokesman said.
