Chilean President Meets Chinese Foreign Minister

Chilean President Ricardo Lagos met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan in Santiago Monday to exchange opinions on issues of common interest.

At a press conference after the meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan described his conversation with President Lagos as "very friendly, jovial, deep and constructive."

Tang said they discussed the development of bilateral relations between China and Chile since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1970, and the friendly cooperation between the two countries in the new century.

The Chinese minister stated that during the meeting he conveyed the invitation of Chinese President Jiang Zeming to his Chilean counterpart Ricardo Lagos to visit China next year, when the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit conference will take place in Shanghai, China's economic center.

According to Tang, President Lagos also invited President Jiang to make an official visit to Chile whenever convenient.

After the meeting with President Lagos, Tang Jiaxuan held a working conference with his Chilean counterpart, Soledad Alvera.

The Chinese foreign minister arrived Sunday for a three-day visit. This is the last leg of his Latin American tour, which has taken him to Cuba, Mexico and Brazil.
