With the successful implementation of the family planning policy, China has witnessed rapid development in the economy and living standards of the Chinese people has remarkably improved, said Vice-Premier Li Lanqing Monday.

Li made the remarks when meeting with representatives from all over the country, who had made outstanding contribution in carrying out the policy.

Family planning is a fundamental policy of China and the central government always emphasizes its importance, said Li, adding that without family planning, an extra 300 million people would have been born.

The Vice-Premier also pointed out that in the next century, China will still face challenges from population and birth control.

Li called upon all party members and Youth League members to carry out the family planning policy for the prosperity of the country.

After the meeting, a national teleconference on rewarding outstanding workers and work units in implementing the policy was held and Wang Zhongyu, secretary-general of the State Council delivered a speech on family planning work.

Twenty years ago, the central government issued an open letter, calling on all party members and Youth League members to make contribution to controlling China's population and implementing the family planning policy in the most populous country on earth.
