"The Sino-Japanese relations will witness a long-term and stable development, should the two countries honor the spirit set forth in the 1972 Sino-Japanese Joint Statement, the 1978 Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship and the 1998 Sino-Japanese Joint Declaration and proceed from the overall situation of maintaining Sino-Japanese friendship," he added. He was confident that Premier Zhu Rongji's forthcoming visit to Japan will be an impetus to Sino-Japanese relations.
