A celebration took place on September 23 to mark the 60th anniversary of the Beijing University of Science and Engineering (BUSE).

Li Peng, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress attended the celebration.

Li, a BUSE graduate, said the world will enter a new century of prospects and challenges. To realize modernization in China, it's a must to achieve its strategic goal of rejuvenating the nation by relying on science and education.

He hopes the university will continue its efforts to contribute to the nation's modernization in the new century and to work hard to gain a good international reputation.

Li wrote an inscription for the university to underline the education of high-level talents in the field of national defense.

The university was set up in 1940 in Yan'an, an old revolutionary base for Chinese communists in Shaanxi Province, northwest China. Over the past 60 years, the university has educated more than 70,000 professionals and achieved over 1,000 research findings in diversified technological and scientific fields, including China's first rockoon.

In another development, the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, the Ministry of Education and the Beijing Municipal Government signed an agreement on jointly carrying out a three-year program to promote the university's education and research.
