China to Enroll 156,000 Graduate Students

The Ministry of Education (MOE) announced Monday that Chinese universities will enroll 156,000 graduate students next year, an increase of 30 percent from this year.

A ministry official said that the move is to provide more opportunities for higher education and to meet the nation's developing needs.

He also disclosed that the MOE, the State Development Planning Commission and the Ministry of Personnel jointly issued a notice for enrolling more graduate students.

The notice asked universities to readjust the structure of specialties and provide support for life science and the information industry, and train high-level professionals for the country's western areas.

The MOE asked related departments to strengthen management and to ensure the quality of enrollments.

Applicants for a master's degree may sign-up from November 10 to November 14, with tests date from January 13 to January 15, 2001.

MOE will update the China Graduate Enrollment Information Network to keep applicants updated on enrollment.
