Official Punished for Accepting Bribes

Li Daqiang, deputy chairman of the board of directors of the Shenhua Group Co. Ltd., has been fired from his position and expelled from the Communist party of China (CPC) for accepting bribes and cash as gifts when he was a deputy governor of Hubei Province.

The decision was jointly made by the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) and the Ministry of Supervision (MOS).

According to a circular jointly issued by the two departments, Li accepted a total of 126,000 yuan in bribes in 1995-96, and 160,000 yuan of gifts in cash, in 1994-98, from local businessmen in Hubei.

The circular accuses the former official for abusing his power. It says that Li deserves the punishments, for he has lost the fundamental principles of a CPC member and has damaged the reputation of public servants.
