Chinese Defense Minister Meets Japanese Guests

Defense Minister Chi Haotian met Monday with a delegation from the Sasakawa Japan-China Friendship Fund, led by Setruya Tabuchi, chairman of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation.

Chi, who is also vice chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, said that Tabuchi and other Japanese friends have made great efforts to promote Sino-Japanese cooperation.

He said that the people-to-people contact has pushed forward the multi-layer cooperation in various areas between the two countries for generations.

He noted that developing the cooperative relationship is not only in line with the fundamental interests of the people of the two countries, but also conducive to the peace and stability in the region and the world at large.

Chi said that "we will never forget the contribution by Japanese leaders of the older generations in developing the friendly cooperation between the two countries."

However, Chi stressed that "we should learn from the past and work together to further the relationship."

Tabuchi and other Japanese guests present at the meeting briefed Chi on the work of the fund.

The Japanese guests arrived in Beijing yesterday for a work meeting at the invitation of the China Association for International Friendly Contacts.

The Sasakawa Japan-China Friendship Fund was jointly launched by the Chinese association and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation in 1989.

The purpose of the fund is to deepen mutual understanding, to promote the friendship and cooperation between China and Japan, and to train talents for the two countries, in a bid to contribute to the common prosperity and development of the two countries and world peace.
