Xiong Ni of China Wins Men's Springboard Diving Preliminary

Defending champion Xiong Ni of China appeared sharp by winning the men's 3m springboard preliminary in a total of 457.38 points.

Xiong, who came out of retirement for his fourth consecutive Olympics, had a slow start in the first two dives. But he soon geared up and held a tight grip on the lead.

Dmitri Saoutine of Russia, who won the gold of men's 10m platform synchronized diving are favorite in the other three men's events, finished third at 444.51 points.

Mexican Fernando Platas finished second while Xiao Hailiang of China placed fifth after the six-dive preliminary.
