Badminton Singles Medal Drives China's Olympic Gold Tally to 17

China put four of five golds of the Olympic badminton events into its bag, as Chinese paddlers won both the men's and women's singles, the women's doubles and the mixed doubles.

World No 7 Ji Xingpeng outpaced Hendrawan of Indonesia, ranking No 2 in the world, to take the men's singles gold.

Ji's gold enables China's gold tally up to 17, second only to the United States.

Prior to the badminton men's singles finals, Chinese men spaddlers Wang Liqing/Yan Sen outpaced their teammates Liu Guoliang/Kong Lihui to take the table tennis men's doubles.

China put a lock on another gold after brushing aside Singapore and Chinese Taipei in table tennis at the Sydney Olympics earlier in the day.

In the table tennis's women's singles semifianls, Li Ju beat Singapore's Jing Jun Hong and Wang Nan beat Chen Jing of China's Taiwan by the same score 3-1.

Wang Nan will face Li Ju in the women's singles final Sunday.

China neted all the gold, silver and copper of the women's doubles, as the world champions Ge Fei and Gu Jun succeeded in defending their Olympic titles. (chinadaily.com.cn)
