Vice-President Hu Meets Overseas Chinese Representatives

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao met in Beijing Friday with some of the participants of the Overseas Chinese Worldwide Forum 2000 held in the eastern coastal city Qingdao.

Hu said the Chinese nation made important contribution to human civilization in history. Especially in the past 20 years, China has achieved remarkable development in the economy, science and technology and other fields.

Thanks to the policies of reform and opening up, the Chinese people have eliminated poverty and are living better lives, Hu said, expressing his heartfelt thanks for the support from overseas Chinese and people of Chinese origin in the past years.

"It is my hope that all our compatriots overseas will support as always China's modernization drive and its great cause of reunification and make greater contributions to the revitalization of the Chinese nation," he said.

He also called on them to continue to promote the development of friendship between the Chinese people and people in countries where they live.

Well-known social workers, entrepreneurs and scientists from over 20 countries and regions attended the three-day forum which closed Thursday.
