First European Car-Free DayDrivers across Europe are being asked to leave their cars at home today and support European Car-Free Day which has been launched by the European Union Environment Commissioner. The EU says sixty-five million people across Europe will take part but a BBC correspondent in Brussels says the level of national commitment varies greatly. She says while more than two-hundred Spanish towns are backing the initiative only five in Britian are doing likewise. Many motoring organisations across Europe have said they won't be supporting the event, calling it a public relations gimmick. But environmentalist have welcomed it as a means of raising awareness of environment issues in the wake of recent fuel protests in Europe. |
