Free Net Access for Cellphone Extended

Mobile phone subscribers in China can enjoy another month of free Internet access service via their cellular phones before they will be charged a discounted rate, according to sources with China Mobile, the major domestic provider of wireless Internet access.

Friday's Chinadaily reported that the China Mobile Communications Corporation began offering wireless Internet service on a trial basis in March and announced that wireless application protocol(WAP)-enabled cellphone users would not be charged for using the service until the end of May.

It then postponed the date to September 20.

WAP is a format that provides easy, secure access to relevant Internet/intranet information and other services through mobile devices in a cost-effective manner.

The WAP-based service is a potentially valuable one, however, since the users of WAP phones are few at present, and since there is currently a dearth of information available on WAP-oriented websites, China Mobile has decided to offer free service for another 30 days, said a company employee on condition of anonymity.
