Free Net Access for Cellphone ExtendedMobile phone subscribers in China can enjoy another month of free Internet access service via their cellular phones before they will be charged a discounted rate, according to sources with China Mobile, the major domestic provider of wireless Internet access.Friday's Chinadaily reported that the China Mobile Communications Corporation began offering wireless Internet service on a trial basis in March and announced that wireless application protocol(WAP)-enabled cellphone users would not be charged for using the service until the end of May. It then postponed the date to September 20. WAP is a format that provides easy, secure access to relevant Internet/intranet information and other services through mobile devices in a cost-effective manner. The WAP-based service is a potentially valuable one, however, since the users of WAP phones are few at present, and since there is currently a dearth of information available on WAP-oriented websites, China Mobile has decided to offer free service for another 30 days, said a company employee on condition of anonymity. |
