Over 90% Polluting Enterprises Meet Set Standard

Wang Jirong, Vice-minister of the State Environmental Protection Administration, told journalists on September 21 that by the end of last August, among 238,000 industrial polluting enterprises, 219,000 had met the set pollution-control standard by bringing their target-hitting rate up to 91.9 percent.

Wang said that among the 46 key environmental protection cities chosen for assessment, 18 have brought the quality of air and ground water up to the specified standard for functional districts, the air quality of 20 cities and the quality of ground water in 33 cities have met the required standard for functional districts.

According to the requirement of the Chinese State Council, the emission of all major industrial pollutants and the quality of environment functional districts of key cities must reach the set standard in another 100 days.

At present, the target-hitting rate of all industrial polluting enterprises in 15 provinces and municipalities has exceeded 90 percent. The target-hitting rate of all industrial polluting enterprises in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai municipalities and Jiangsu and Shandong provinces and that of key industrial polluting enterprises have exceeded 95 percent.

Up to the end of last August, among the above-said 46 key cities for environmental protection, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Suzhou, Haikou, Shantou, Dalian,Yantai, Zhuhai and Qingdao had reached the set standard ahead of time.
