China, Brazil to Intensify Technological Cooperation

China and Brazil agreed Thursday in Brasilia to further promote bilateral scientific and technological cooperation, which constitutes an important content in their strategic bilateral relations.

At a signing ceremony of a new Sino-Brazilian space technology accord, visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said that such cooperation has far-reaching significance, as it is conducted between the world's two biggest countries, and is a new type of south-south cooperation.

Tang said that China and Brazil have common needs, and also solid bases to widen cooperation in the high-technology area, which is counted with a brilliant prospect.

Tang said that within the framework of the world's multi-polarization and globalization, countries in way of development must be united to promote cooperation. In this aspect, China and Brazil must take the first step to make their contributions.

On his part, Brazil's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luiz Felipe Lampreia, said signing of the accord represents the excellent political relationship between China and Brazil.

He said that thanks to the 26-year-long diplomatic relations, Brazil and China have nowadays more frankness and growing consensus in dialogues, which has impelled both countries to progress and association.

He indicated that this accord, the Satellite Sino-Brazilian Project of Land Resources, will help both countries to better understand natural and environmental phenomena and bring benefits to farming and fishing fields.

Through the accord, China and Brazil will build two more satellites in forthcoming years. The first satellite was launched successfully in December 1999 in China, and the second launching is programmed for before October 2001.
