Industry Promotes Information Construction

China's textile industry is set to build a nationwide information network in the next five years. Du Yuzhou, director of the State Administration of Textile Industry, announced the overall plan for the five-year (2001-2005) construction project at a textile conference held Thursday.

"The industry will strive to meet four goals by 2005 in the establishment of a nationwide information system to reduce cost and improve efficiency," he said.

He said that hopefully, the application of technologies will result in a 30 percent increase in the industry's annual growth by the year 2005, which is currently 15 percent.

A computer and network system will be first established in the country's 200 key textile companies, he said.

Electronic commerce is also a significant part of the construction project. "On-line trading of textile products is expected to reach 40 billion yuan in five years," said Du.

A huge sum of money will be poured into the project to accomplish the goals, especially in establishing local information networks, Du said.

He added that the promotion of information construction in the industry is urgent and is reflected by the demand for new technological development.

"After China enters the World Trade Organization, domestic textile enterprises will have more opportunities to use global resources, and will have a bigger presence in the international competition," he concluded.
