China's Top Legislator Meets Republic of Korea's Chief Justice

China's Top Legislator Meets Republic of Korea's Chief Justice
Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, met with Choi Jong Young, chief justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Korea (ROK), Thursday afternoon.

Li said China and ROK have witnessed a smooth growing of relations in political and economic areas since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1992. Leaders of the two countries have also maintained close contacts over the years, he noted.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin met ROK President Kim Dae-Jung recently in New York at a meeting of the headquarters of the United Nations, and Li himself met Lee Man-Sup, speaker of National Assembly of ROK at the UN also.

The contacts between the courts of the two countries over the past years have also increased. The current visit by Choi Jong Young, Li said, will help strengthen the exchange and cooperation between judicial departments of the two countries, and contribute to China-ROK friendship.

Li briefed Choi on China's judicial system. He said China has basically built a framework of laws with Chinese characteristics. The framework is based on the Constitution, which, revised in 1999, aims to build a country ruled by law.

Choi, said the judicial departments of the two countries have had very good cooperation, and he has seen the progress of China's judicial construction through his current trip to China.
