More HK Fuel Firms Raise LPG Prices
Three more Hong Kong fuel companies have raised the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by 11 percent, reports Hong Kong's English newspaper "iMail" Thursday.
Mobil Oil, Esso and China Resources Gas increased the LPG price in cylinders from 8.60 HK dollars (1.10 US dollars) to 9.58 HK dollars (1.23 US dollars) per kilogram, following similar moves by Caltex and Shell.
Some 300,000 households were estimated to have been affected by the LPG price increase.
Meanwhile, the transport industry, one of the hardest hit by the oil crisis, has called on the government to consider cutting fuel taxes.
Urban Taxi Drivers Association Joint Committee Chairman Kwok Chi-piu hoped the government could reduce the fuel duty by between 30-50 HK cents (3.8-6.4 US cents).
Drivers had been forced to pay additional 10 HK dollars (1.28 US dollars) for fuel per shift since petrol firms dropped fuel discounts, he said.
"Although it doesn't sound too bad, our business is actually shrinking. We are very worried whether we can take it if fuel prices continue to rise," he said.
