Chinese Premier Expresses Sympathy over Flooding in Vietnam

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji on Thursday expressed sympathy over the recent flooding in Vietnam.

"I learned that torrential rains have hit Mekong delta of your country, causing heavy fatalities and severe economic damage as crops were flooded and houses were destroyed," Zhu said in a message to his Vietnamese counterpart, Phan Van Khai.

"On behalf of the Chinese government and people, I extend my sincere sympathy to your government and the disaster-stricken people."

"I am confident that under the leadership of the Vietnamese Communist Party and government, your people will definitely overcome the disasters and rebuild their homes."

The floods, which hit Vietnam's Mekong delta for more than two months, have claimed at least 27 lives.
