Chinese Legislature Strengthens Supervision of Economic Work

The Chinese legislature Wednesday convened a three-day forum to summarize the work and exchange experience on economic legislation and supervision of government economic work.

The meeting was attended by leading officials from the National People's Congress's (NPC) sub-committee, the Financial and Economic Committee, and financial committees from provincial people's congresses.

According to Chen Guangyi, chairman of the NPC sub-committee, his committee has in the past two years drafted 12 economic laws, of which four have been adopted by the NPC and the sub-committee has also reviewed another 12 draft laws in request to the NPC Standing Committee.

The committee also drafted two landmark bills, one on the supervision of government economic work and the other on the supervision and examination of the central budget.

The two bills have been approved by the top legislature and are having substantial effect on government economic bodies, Chen said.

He also called on legislative bodies at all levels to fully exercise their duties to the constitutions and law to supervise as well as give full support to government economic work as a whole.

Local legislative officials also explained their practices in regulating local government economic work, especially on the examination of budgetary plans and their implementation.
