Armed Robber Captured in Chongqing

Police in Chongqing Municipality, southwest China, has captured Zhang Jun, principal culprit of an armed robbery in Changde City, central China's Hunan Province, local police announced Wednesday.

Zhang was caught Tuesday when meeting with his mistress. Also seized were a pistol, 180 bullets and an antitank grenade.

Zhang Jun along with three other accomplices, ambushed an armored car, killed seven people and wounded four others in downtown Changde on September 1.

Police have arrested 13 suspects involved in the case and seized two pistols, seven shotguns, two grenades, two self-made bombs and 1,949 bullets, said a police officer at a press briefing in Chongqing.

Four of the suspects have confessed their crimes. Arms were also found at the home of one of the suspects.

Police said that the gang is suspected of committing 12 bank robberies in Hunan and Hubei provinces and Chongqing municipality in the past seven years. Other suspected crimes committed by the gang include the killing of 22 people and wounding of 20 others, looting 230,000 yuan (approximately 25,300 U.S. dollars) and cash and jewelry worth 4.85 million yuan (approximately 584,000 U.S. dollars).
