China Beats Germany in Women's HockeyChina, who gained Olympic qualification for the first time, continued their giant-killing feats in the Olympic women's hockey with a 2-1 win over Germany in group B here on Wednesday. The Chinese, who stunned Champions Trophy winners the Netherlands in their opening match, scored once in each half to upset the 1992 silver-medallists. Zhou Wanfeng put the Chinese ahead as early as the second minute following their first penalty corner. Leading 1-0 at half-time, China increased their tally midway through the second half when Chen Hui scored with a scoop from the top of the circle. The Germans launched a desperate attack in the last quarter, but Inga Moeller's goal 10 minutes before the final whistle came too late to deny the Chinese. China, whose only setback here was the 2-0 loss to New Zealand, swept to the top of the group with six points from three matches. Germany and New Zealand follow with four points each. A draw with South Africa in their last match on Friday will ensure China a place in the medal pool round. The Germans must defeat the Dutch on Friday to stay in contention. |
