China's First Nationalities Institute Marks Its 50th Anniversary

The Northwest China Institute for Nationalities, the first institute of its kind in China, celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding Wednesday.

During the four-day celebrations, there will be opening ceremonies for an exhibition hall, a science and technology hall, and a museum. Conferences on the development of the western region and higher education of ethnic groups will also be held in the institute.

Established in 1950, the institute began training cadres for different ethnic regions. More than 40,000 people have graduated from the institute over the past five decades.

The institute, affiliated with the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, consists of three sub-institutes, which have 15 departments and 43 specialties. The institute also has the right to grant post-graduate diplomas in eight specialties including ethnic languages and religion.

The Northwest China Institute for Nationalities has a faculty of 1,000 and has more than 8,000 students from 36 different ethnic groups in China, including the Hui and Tibetan ethnic groups.

The institute has conducted 150 scientific research programs, published over 200 books and more than 2,500 papers in the past five decades. It has won state awards for more than a dozen research achievements.
