Overseas Chinese Urged to Help Boost China's Profile in the Global Economy

Chinese Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Shi Guangsheng voiced his hope Wednesday that on the backdrop of faster economic globalization and China's pending accession into the World Trade Organization (WTO), overseas Chinese will help merge China into the global economy.

Shi made the remarks during the Overseas Chinese Worldwide Forum 2000, which opened Wednesday morning in Qingdao.

Shi thanked all delegates for their active participation in China's economic development over the past decades and their efforts on promoting China's trade ties with foreign countries.

China's entry into the WTO will help strengthen trade and economic cooperation between the mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and will aid in China's reunification cause, he said.

"Overseas Chinese will benefit from opportunities brought on by China's WTO accession," he noted.
