Two French Journalists Held by Philippine Rebels Rescued
Two French television journalists held by Muslim rebels in the southern Philippines have been rescued unharmed, President Joseph Estrada said Wednesday. He said the journalists would be taken to the capital, Manila on Wednesday. Estrada said military troops hoped to rescue an American hostage, Jeffrey Schilling, later in the day. The Abu Sayyaf rebels still hold 17 hostages on remote Jolo island. The rebels still hold three Malaysians, a Filipino kidnapped from a Malaysian diving resort in April and 12 Filipino Christian evangelists. Thousands of troops launched an assault on the rebels' camps on Saturday in an attempt to rescue the hostages. Since the assault began, the military has overrun three major Abu Sayyaf camps and smaller hide-outs, but found no sign of the hostages there.
