Cool-down Thinking in the Nano Fever

Following the wide popularity of Internet and gene, the nano fever is sweeping China now. However, facing the tide bearing various nano concepts, people can��t help doubting that whether the age of nano has really come and whether the future prefixed nano- is really so brilliant and optimistic.

When the public is standing on the sideline with cautious attitude, scientists who have devoted into the scientific research on nanotechnology are also holding a rather mixed feeling about the current hit of nano--On one hand, the hit will bring a general effect that the whole society will actively get a primary knowledge on nano, which will help the development of nano research and finally achieve the industrialization; on the other hand, due to it might be overheating, the fake ones may confuse or mislead people.

It is so true that nanotechnology is a revolutionary technology. And when the measurement unit shrinks to nanometer, so many incredible effects have occurred and will occur around us, which brings profound impacts on human��s life.

Now, the application of nanotechnology has touched all aspects of our daily lives with the nanomaterial as its pioneer. At present stage, scientists are mainly taking full use of the unique functions of nanogranule, such as antibacterial function, ultraviolet radiation proof and static proof, and the function brought by material nanolization that can sharply raise the intensity of the material. All these functions put into use have changed and improved the function of products.

Scientists note that nanomaterial has existed since ancient time. What is left after woods and candles have been burnt is exactly a natural nanometarial. Due to the limitation of the scientific technology of the past, people failed to discover and research the material from the angle of nano. Even now, what we know about nano is only a few drops of water comparing with the sea of nanotehcnology..

No matter at home or abroad, nano belongs to a leading and strategic technology and human are still in the stage of basic research. The tremendous space of nanotechnology is waiting for human to explore, including nanoelectronics that can bring the qualitative change on chips and discs, nanomechanics that can exact the mechanic measurement unit to nanometer and nanomaterialogy that can discover and invent new materials.

Scientists indicate that it is still a long way to go to arrange atoms freely, though human could move atoms successful at the beginning of 90s. Just like the gene recomposing technology, the development of nanotechnology demands a painstaking period.

'We should adopt the objective attitude to welcome nanotechnology,�� said Mr. Bai Cunli, the vice dean of Chinese Academy of Science, also the leading scientist on nano research, ��though nano has dipped our lives, it, at least, will take decades for nanotechnology to arise the great and general impact as information technology.

Even for those comparatively developed nanotechnology, the long way with difficulties is right lying between it and its industrialization. And the process of being widely popularized and the upgrade of products can��t be skipped on the way of the application of nanotechnology. At present, there is a production line of nanomaterial in China while it is hard to gain profits owing to the limitation of market.

Facing the participation of enterprises, scientists are not blindly optimistic. The research of nano is calling on the devotion of the whole society. In U.S., the civilian investment on nano is largely surpassing that from the government. Along with the system reconstruction of China��s scientific and research agencies, nano research is hunger for the nutrition from enterprises. However, due to the misunderstandings of a few companies to nanotechnology, the pseudo nano phenomenon has drilled in, which is characterized by blind investment, snapping up their own products by taking advantage of nano concept and misleading the consumers. Scientists warn against these phenomena that people should weed the fakes to build up healthy environment for nanotechnology and nanoindustry.

Specialists said that to embrace the future of nanotechnology, we should have a comprehensive analysis on its impact on China and grasp its developing trend from the strategic view. Moreover, the scientific plan should be designed to guide the balanced development among basic research, application research and industry exploitation, based on which Chinese Academy of Science will pour 25 million yuan to the research of nanotechnology in 3 years. And for those companies, which are truly interested in nanotechnology, should stay in calmness and do their own contributions in proper sequence.

Though human, now, only have a glance to the dazzling nanotechnology, scientists believe that all pictures we have painted for nano will come true. (Source: chinahd)
