Most Drug-addicts in Beijing Unmarried: Survey

Most of the drug-addicts in the Chinese capital of Beijing are youngsters and unmarried people, according to a latest survey by the Public Security Bureau of Beijing.

The survey, conducted on 200 heroin users of a drug rehabilitation center affiliated to the public security bureau, shows that some 69 percent of the respondents are youngsters aged between 18 and 35, and some 56 percent of the respondents are unmarried.

The 200 respondents had been randomly selected among the rehabilitation center's 800 heroin users.

Experts here indicate that young people are vulnerable to narcotics because they like searching for excitement.

The survey also shows that the jobless and self-employed people are easy targets of drug addiction.

China now faces a grim drug situation, with more than 680,000 drug addicts by the end of 1999.
