Li Peng Ends His Russia Visit

Chinese top legislator Li Peng left Vladivostok Tuesday for Beijing, ending his nine-day official visit to Russia.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress, met Primorye Territory Governor Yevgeny Nazdratenko and leaders of the territory's legislature during his stay in Vladivostok.

Li had visited Moscow and Novosibirsk. While in the Russian capital, Li held meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Mikha Kasyanov, Federation Council (upper house of the parliament) Chairman Yegor Stroyev and State Duma (lower house) Speaker Gennady Seleznyov.

He also called on former Russian President Boris Yeltsin and met separately with former Soviet Prime Minister Nikolai Ryzhkov and former Russian prime ministers Yevgeny Primakov and Viktor Chernomyrdin.

Earlier Tuesday, the Vladivostok-based Far Eastern State University (FESU) conferred an honorary Doctorate of Laws on Li.

At the conferring ceremony, FESU President Vladimir Kurilov commended Li for his contributions to the development of Sino-Russian relations, to China's economic progress and legislative construction.

Russia was the last leg of Li's latest trip overseas. Before Russia, he attended the Conference of Presiding Officers of National Parliaments in New York and visited Iceland, Lithuania, Belarus, Estonia and Latvia.
