Hearings on Telecom Price Readjustment Underway

In accordance with the Price Law of PRC, hearings on telecom price readjustment were called Monday in Beijing by the Ministry of Information Industry and State Development Planning Commission, after which related plans will be submitted to the State Council for examination and approval. This marks that China is going to have as is widely concerned a price revamping program to be finally released.

Present at the hearings are representatives of government institutions, customers, experts and scholars, of local governments and enterprises, telecom entrepreneurs, value-added services and group users. Five meetings had formerly been held by the Ministry of Information Industry and the Ministry of Finance to solicit opinions from NPC and CPPCC members, leading corporations, experts and big users.

The reported price revamping is said to have two purposes. One is to promote Internet popularization and application in national economy and further advance the information industry so as to sharpen the market competitive edge of telecom enterprises in China and abroad. The other is to eliminate price gaps between urban and rural phone calls to ease farmers' burden and work for an expanded rural market in China.
